This national award is specific to breast cancer nursing and will be awarded annually through a nomination process open to healthcare professionals. Presentation of an honorarium recognizing the award recipient will be made at the CANO/ACIO Annual Conference.

With the generous support of Pfizer, CANO/ACIO offers an awards program for oncology nurses to recognize excellence in the areas of practice, education, research and leadership. Each award consists of an honorarium, which are presented at the annual conference. CANO/ACIO members are encouraged to nominate their colleagues who demonstrate excellence and leadership in oncology nursing.

Pfizer Award of Excellence in Nursing Clinical Practice

Sponsored by:

  • demonstrates leadership in the development of oncology patient care. Has made significant contributions to the improvement of oncology patient care at the agency, community, provincial or national level.
  • demonstrates leadership in the care of oncology patients and their families
  • makes significant contributions to the improvement of nursing care of oncology patients
  • utilizes and clearly articulates current research and theory applicable to cancer nursing
  • influences the practice of nursing through communication and caring
  • encourages creative approaches to patient care
  • encourages development, implementation and evaluation of changes in nursing practice as well as developing professionally as an individual
  • must possess the ability to act as a change agent in nursing practice (e.g. congenial, supportive, energetic, and enthusiastic)

Pfizer Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership

  • Demonstrates administrative leadership in an oncology setting by supporting and facilitating the development and/or enhancement of oncology programs at the agency, community, provincial or national level, e.g.:
  • Actively involved in the strategic planning and evaluation of oncology services.
  • Leadership in planning and implementing programs which respond to a changing health care system.
  • Networks with others involved in oncology care across the region, province and country.
  • Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge and sensitivity to rapidly expanding treatment modalities and health care trends, e.g.: Keeps abreast of current research related to oncology treatments and trends in health care.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary committee work.
  • Demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the development of excellence in oncology nursing, e.g.: Fosters professional development of oncology nurses through providing support for education, research, practice changes and professional association involvement. CANO/Amgen Award for Innovation in Oncology Patient and Family Education

This award recognizes oncology nurses whose primary function is patient and family care and who have demonstrated creativity in the development of patient education materials or programs or the delivery of patient education. The award consists of an honorarium, flight and lodging at the annual CANO/ACIO conference for the recipient. (If it is a team award, AMGEN will provide flight and lodging for one member of the team to accept the award on behalf of the team.)

CANO/ACIO Award of Excellence in Kidney Cancer Nursing

This award, sponsored by Kidney Cancer Canada, in honour of its co-founder, Tony Clark, will acknowledge an individual or group of CANO/ACIO member(s) who have made an exceptional difference to the lives of kidney cancer patients.Tony was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2004 and throughout his cancer journey was focused on living life and advocating for educational resources and supports for other kidney cancer patients and their caregivers so that no one would go through their journey alone. Tony was a co-founder of Kidney Cancer Canada in 2006.

Nominations should articulate/describe at least 2 of the following:

  • Demonstration of the importance of the nurse/patient relationship
  • Demonstration of nursing leadership in clinical practice and advocates for improved patient care
  • Demonstration of mentorship of other nurses in the area of kidney cancer management
  • Utilization of current research and theory applicable to cancer nursing or the conduction of research that has a clinical focus and practical application for patients with kidney cancer and has the potential to enhance nursing knowledge related to kidney cancer
  • Develops or promotes patient education materials which address or improve quality of life related to symptom management or treatment-related side effects

Lymphoma Foundation Award of Excellence – Patient Advocacy

This award, sponsored by the Lymphoma Foundation of Canada, recognizes a CANO/ACIO member whose actions support the concept of patient advocacy and decision making, or who promotes change within the oncology/hematology communities. This award will be given to a nurse who advocates for patients, or supports patients in advocating for themselves

Nominations should articulate/describe at least 2 of the following:

  • How the nominee has developed a resource or program which helps to improve oncology/hematology patient care ay the agency, community, provincial or national level
  • How the nominee has acted as a an agent of change for patients diagnosed with cancer or hematologic conditions
  • How the nominee has demonstrates leadership by developing, supporting or facilitating initiatives that improve patient outcomes
  • Develops, leads or facilitates a patient/caregiver support group
  • Counsels patients/caregivers regarding treatment decision-making
